Choose Your Words Wisely

Updated: Aug 31, 2021

There are only a few things more evident of the position of our heart than the words we choose to say. The bible describes our words as being the overflow of the heart.

Meaning, what we say reveals where our heart is at.

Sometimes words are boastful. "I'm this and I'm that", followed by the proud announcement from yourself about what a humble person you are. Words can be used to brag, to flaunt, and to gloat. Sometimes words are about putting on a show, fake and superficial. Typically this is done on social media these days.

Sometimes our words might be intended to cut or harm others. Words are very powerful that way. The bible states that the tongue is as sharp as a two edge sword. Read this! Hebrews 4:12 says "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (WOW! So powerful! Read that again!)

Then, sometimes our words are used as tools to help edify the Body of Christ and proclaim His Kingdom. <3

Wonderfully, we use words that express gratitude or encourage others. To praise God and thank Him for all He is and all He does. When we use our words in this way, we utilize them in the way God intended. Our words are a reflection of who we are, whom we trust, and what we value. They also influence others. They are tools to serve and to love (both others as well as ourselves).

Some call words “expressions” and that is exactly what they are. The Bible teaches us to be intentional about our words and purposeful about how we use them. With it we can edify or destroy, we can build or tear down.

Like everything else in life, words are an opportunity for us to steward. A resource at our disposal. How are you using them? How can we use them more effectively? How can we align what we say with what we believe? It's so important to ask yourself this because when we do, our lives, the lives of others, and The Kingdom of Heaven are all magnified.

Shouting words of victory!

Diane
